Marinakis: Greece achieved the biggest drop in public debt in the EU

"These figures confirm, once again, that the strategy for reducing Greek debt is successful" government spokesperson said.

Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis on Thursday highlighted Eurostat's announcement that Greece had achieved the biggest reduction of public debt as a percentage of GDP out of all countries in the EU, reducing it by more than 10 units between the third quarter of 2023 and the third quarter of 2024.

"These figures confirm, once again, that the strategy for reducing Greek debt is successful, as the reduction of the debt by more than 50 percentage points in the last four years is the largest ever recorded on the European continent.
The early, in many cases, repayment of public debt leads to a saving of tens of millions of euros in interest since, the more the public debt decreases, the more our country can access the markets and succeed in borrowing at lower interest rates. Apart from everything else, this means savings of money that is gradually directed toward spending to support the citizens,"
Marinakis said.

The spokesperson also announced that Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the Asklipiio hospital in the seaside suburb of Voula on Thursday, for the inauguration of new ER wings donated by the Aigeas non-profit company of the Athanasios and Marina Martinos Foundation.

The prime minister was also briefed on the reconstruction of the child psychiatry clinic at the hospital, which will have 115 beds, the spokesperson said.
Marinakis then announced the measures decided in a meeting on Wednesday regarding EOPYY pharmacies, to improve services for the citizens, noting that this does not entail the closure of any EOPYY pharmacies but merely providing alternative pathways for delivering high-cost medication through private pharmacies.

Marinakis then announced the closure of 392 property deed offices throughout Greece, saying this signalled a historic transition to an era with less paper and more speed, to a modern, digital Land Cadastre, which would now take over all their duties relating to the transfer and management of real estate.
He announced that the work of digitising 600 million pages, financed by the Recovery and Resilience Facility, was now at 45% completion, while the new system offered new and important services, such as akinita.gov.gr which issued transfer certifications for all property transfers submitted since January 2024 in a single day.

Marinakis also noted that the Land Cadastre is expected to be 100% completed within 2025 and was the first government service to use AI to issue administrative decisions, which had helped double its output.

The spokesperson announced that the first 'Rebrain Greece' event in 2025 will take place on March 29 in London, inviting companies to take part in order to recruit highly-skilled personnel, as well as an environment and energy ministry tender for a concession to search and mine for antimony on the island of Chios. He said the first phase of the tender, involving non-binding offers, concludes on March 10, 2025, at which point the eligible participants will be invited to submit binding offers.

Marinakis concluded the briefing by announcing that the prime minister will reply on Friday at noon to a question tabled for him in Parliament by main opposition PASOK-KINAL leader Nikos Androulakis regarding the primary sector.
On Saturday at 11:00, he added, a vote will be held in Parliament to elect the new president of the Hellenic Republic.
