"I believe that my presence here today has a special symbolism, because the inauguration of any sports facility is always a moment of great joy and optimism. However, today’s facility has a special value and a special significance, as you, Mr. Mayor and dear residents of the Olympic Village, are well aware of the state into which this area had descended after the glorious 2004 Olympics," Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Wednesday, during his greeting at the event for the reopening of the Olympic Village swimming pool.
"Today we are here at a very pleasant moment, 21 years after that unique event that raised Greece so high and made us all so proud, to once again give to the local community, the residents of the Olympic Village and the sports clubs of the surrounding area, this fully renovated Olympic swimming pool, so that you can enjoy it and give, especially to young children, the opportunity to love sports and especially swimming," the prime minister added.
Mitsotakis noted "the great importance that we have attached to the maintenance of existing sports infrastructure, because the Greek state is good at constructing projects but very bad at maintaining them afterwards and the history of the Olympic facilities, I believe, attests to this reality in the most, I would say, revealing way.
"We have managed, step-by-step, to give important Olympic facilities back to society but at the same time to carry out important intervention projects, for infrastructure but mainly repairs, in sports centres throughout the country. "I think that this project fully certifies that, ultimately, every government is judged not by its intentions but by its results," the premier concluded.
