Kyriakos Mitsotakis: We promote a coherent plan of state reforms

«The aim is for Greece to end up with even fewer taxes, primarily for the middle class, with an average wage of 1,500 euros and a minimum wage of 950 euros» prime minister said.

In opening remarks at a cabinet meeting which he chaired on Monday, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said that the meeting will focus primarily on the state budget for 2025.

"This will, in any case, keep us occupied throughout the coming period, it is actually the plan that puts into practice all the things I had the opportunity to announce at the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF). At the same time, it is also the first of the three steps that lead us to the goals we have set for 2027 by the end of the four-year term.

The aim is for Greece to end up with even fewer taxes, primarily for the middle class, with an average wage of 1,500 euros and a minimum wage of 950 euros. This year, however, the budget has one more feature, as prices around the world and in Greece have risen cumulatively for a three-year period. This budget responds to high prices by doubly supporting income. By reducing the burdens of households and businesses on the one hand and increasing wages on the other, which certainly takes some time, until the balance is restored. But only in this way will the final solution come," Mitsotakis stressed.

"I am well aware that products and services remain significantly more expensive than during the pandemic or even before the war in Ukraine and this is why I insist that the stimulation of disposable income and the purchasing power of households is a one-way street. For this reason the budget, while it concerns 2025, actually has 2027 as its horizon, so that these price hikes are offset and all that remains in effect are the steady [wage] raises each year," noted the prime minister.

"It is the financial substantiation of a political road map, which keeps our country on a steady path of progress, seeking henceforth to translate the positive indicators of growth into a tangible social result. Always, however, and we will insist on this, with prudence and moderation that prevent derailments like those currently being experienced by powerful countries that have been placed under surveillance by the European Commission, such as France and Italy. On the contrary, we promote a coherent plan of state reforms, but also a plan to care for the citizen," he added.

Referring to the opposition, the prime minister said that he contacted the new president of SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance Sokratis Famellos and congratulated him.

"I hope that these new balances in the parliament will turn out to be beneficial for the quality of parliamentary dialogue, first and foremost," he said.
