Mitsotakis: Bill on bad agricultural loans to be submitted next week

"It is an important regulation for hundreds of cooperatives, for over 20,000 farmers," the prime minister said at the start of the meeting.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with members of the Board of Directors of the National Union of Agricultural Cooperatives on Thursday, at the Maximos Mansion. During their meeting, the importance of the bill for the regulation of bad loans of cooperatives and farmers was emphasized, with the aim of further strengthening the primary sector.

"As we committed and have discussed extensively, we are submitting to Parliament the new framework for the regulation of bad loans of farmers and agricultural cooperatives. You know very well, because we were the first to discuss it together, how great a relief this is for problems and pending issues that come from the distant past. It is an important regulation for hundreds of cooperatives, for over 20,000 farmers," the prime minister said at the start of the meeting.

The draft law, which will be introduced in the Plenary Session of the Parliament next week and was formulated in collaboration with the Bank of Greece, provides for the possibility of writing off part of the debt, extending the repayment schedule and reducing the interest rate. It also contains provisions for the management of agricultural loans by specialized managers who have a wide knowledge of the sector.
